What is the purpose?

I am a military member currently overseas. My phone is in airplane mode to avoid international charges and I cant get Wi-Fi everywhere. I bought the translator so I could use it when I need it out in the city. Little did I know, you need an internet connection to use it. What good is that? When I have an internet connection, I could just get on google translate for free. Thanks for nothing.
